Were there any minor or major battles in the ETO that took place more or less on the same sites as battles in WWI? For an example example, weren't there major battles around Ornel in France in both conflicts?

Yes, although predominantly in the 1940 campaign rather than 1944, as much of the original WW1 front line was overrun with little fighting in the great dash for the Rhine in August/September 1944.

Cheers

There were quite a few in 1940. For 1944-45, you want to look at the=20 lower Alsace area (around the Colmar pocket).

In the east, there were lots of battles over WWI battlefields.
