As for the reasons on why he killed himself, it was not to face what he would've been up against if captured alive. It was also customary in nazi high ranking officers to commit suicide if capture was imminent (Model was the most illustrative instance, but there were more) because being captured as a high ranking officer was kind of a dishonorable thing to do (same reason why most captains did go down with their ship even if they had the chance to save their lifes).

As for her wife killing his children, that's whoefully incorrect. Hitler had no offspring with Eva Braun at all. You might be confusing Hitler/Braun suicide with the Goebbels family. There, indeed, Magda Goebbels did take her children to the bunker just prior to commiting suicide with her husband. There they had a meal with Hitler and when the kids went off to sleep she poisoned them all. Then she and her husband killed themselfs aswell. Absolutely crazy people.

Hitler had just learned of Mussolini's fate. Being shot and then being strung up by piano wire in public to have indignities offered.

This in particular was why he ordered his body be burned.

From a psychological point of view he had gone from being a great success whom everbody awed, to a despised powerless person facing total failure as an individual. It was too much to cope with. One of the clues to his thinking can be found in his last will, his dreams of a Fourth Reich and a desire to become a martyr for the nazi cause.

It is also worth noting that Hitler expected to win at Berlin. he intended to stay to draw Soviet divisions to surround him and then for Stiener's army to the south, Volksturm units to the west and SS divisions to the north to smash the Soviets against the "anvil" of berlin from behind.

When the big day came all these German relief forces melted away. In particular Himmler's SS units around Oranienberg were under the command of Himmler who was trying to negotiate a peace with the west.

Even at that late stage (27 April to 30 April 1945) Hitler sent SS Lt Gen Wilhelm Mohnke under a white flag to try and negotiate Hitler's escape from Berlin and flight to Tokyo.

The Soviets were offered the capitulation of all German forces in northern Germany and Denmark, but they rejected this. [source; The Bormann Brotherhood, by William Stevenson]

His suicide was by no means Hitler's plan until the last couple of days.
