There has been plenty of discussion (both here and in soc.history.what-if) of German plans to invade Britain, and what would have happened if they had tried. But I have not seen much disscussion of why those plans were never activated.

So, why did Germany not try to invade Britain?

In brief, because it couldn't. Had a workable plan been found (one German general said of the Sealion plan 'I may as well put my men straight through a sausage mincer', it would certainly have been carried out.

Faced with a military impasse, Hitler decided to defeat Britain by invading the USSR.
