During WW II, did they have the 'ball drop' on New Year's in Times Square like they do now?

On the 31st I had in the background a program on the history of the ball dropping. Fox News network. I remember only something about the war years but not what. So try their website or write this down for next year. Certainly more such shows for the millenium.
