Much more intriguing is the question of what would have happened if Finland had accepted help from Britain and France in February/March -1940. Both countries offered to sent contingents to Finland (i.e. declare war on Russia) but in March the Finnish political and military leadership decided that the offered help was too small (8000 British troops, the French still less) and came too late and that negotiating for peace was the best alternative.
If Finland had accepted the offered help the implications could have been staggering - Britain at war with BOTH Germany and Russia, possibly joined by the US later on. No East Front for Germany? And what about the final outcome of such a war? A victorious Nazi-Germany or first the defeat of Germany and then of Russia? When?
There has been a small discussion of this in Finnish newspapers during the last months, but the only conclusion reached is that the Finnish decision to accept the nefarious peace in -40 was of crucial importance not only to Finland but to the events of WWII.
