Now as many people are discussing the War attrocities of the Germans, let me ask you if the 'Eastern allies' were as cruel as the Germans or less than.

The 1st Byelorussian Front, in 1944 during the Warsaw Uprising, suffered 100,000 casualties trying to liberate Warsaw. It's in Erickson. So don't tell me they were as brutal as the Germans - the US never took that many casualties trying to liberate any city.

Well, knowing how Soviet Partizans raped and massacred Finnish civilians, one must admit that winners take it all, no questions asked. These war criminals are still among us, highly respected veterans who got their Hero of Soviet Union medals by claiming they hit military targets.

Finland was just a sideshow, I bet that especially Poles were murdered very liberally by both Axis and Soviet troops, paramilitary and regular. In these kind of barbaric actions I feel that a body count is rather pointless, both sides were just unbelievable, even their propaganda machinery could not exaggerate the horrible deeds of their enemy.

Liberate??? A strange choice of word considering what happened to Poland after the war.

The Russians didn't send any help into Warsaw, and the tanks that were ahead of the Red Army were ordered to turn back. The Russians just watched how the AK and the Germans Battled it out between each other.

Leaving the strange reasoning here aside (does taking more casualties make you less brutal?) the Front did not 'liberate' Warsaw during the uprising. The Germans had plently of time to completely eliminate the ghetto before Warsaw was assaulted.

That's a nonsequitor.

What is it about taking a lot of casualties that would prevent you from acting brutally?

The Japanese regularly suffered staggering casualties and were in close contention for title of most brutal during the war.

As for 'liberate', a more accurate term would be 'capture'. The Soviets CAPTURED Warsaw. They certainly didn't do it for the benefit of the Poles, any more than the Germans capture Kiev for the benefit of the Ukrainians.

The Soviet 2nd Tank Army was counterattacked by the Hermann Goering, 4th, 5th SS, and 19th Panzer divisions at Wolomin, 15 km from Warsaw, in early August, 1944. 3rd Tank Corps was surrounded and wiped out, and 8th Guards Tank Corps was <driven> back with heavy loss, not ordered back. On August 7, 2nd Tank Army was replaced by 47th Army and taken into the High Command Reserve to be rebuilt. The forces of 1st Byelorussian Front did <not> just watch as the Poles and Germans battled in Warsaw, but launched repeated attacks on 4th SS Panzer Corps on the outskirts of Warsaw throughout August and September, as recorded in the daily reports of 4th SS Panzer Corps to 9th Army for this

The ghetto was destroied long before the 1944. The Warsaw uprising was another action.

In addition the Soviets refused permission for US planes flying into or out of Poltava to drop supplies or weapons to the Polish Home Army in Warsaw during the fighting.
