To All:

Could someone reply to me with the total number of carrier's that were in existence and being used by the United States during WWII? Also, if someone could give me a web page as reference where this is listed, I would greatly appreciate it, as I need to prove it to another person. If you

appreciate it. I will post a reply to this newsgroup summarizing all the responses I receive. Thank you once again.

Sincerely, Marc Bressman

This is a little tricky, as there were many escort carriers built by the US but turned over to other navies for operation, especially Britain.

Also you have to decide whether to count SABLE and WOLVERINE, coal-burning paddle-wheel excursion steamers on the Great Lakes that were converted into 'training carriers'.

Some carriers were just being finished when the war ended; at various stages from just launched, to completed, to commissioned, to working up for active service.

This site is maintained by Andrew Toppan, and contains several additional pages with really authoritative information about warships and navies generally.
