Can anybody help me in regards to books that delve with the pros and cons of dropping the atomic bomb on Japan. What is the consensus in here, should we have or did we make a mistake?

As my father's U.S. Army Combat Engineer regiment was assigned to the Second Marine Division for the initial invasion of Japan and that Division was expected to cease to exist after D plus 2 I think it was a very good decision.

Second Marine division survived Tarawa and Saipan. I think they could handle Japan mainland too.

Too bad you were not with them at the time. I am sure that you thinking they could handle it would have wiped out the fact that they were expecting over 90 per cent casaulties over the first week of the invasion.

Of course they could have 'handled it,'whatever that means, but that is really, really not the point. The US would have stomped the Japanese during operation Olympic but, all other arguments aside, if the Japanese did not intend on surrendering (and that is the real issue) why waste a single American life? Harry Truman was not, and should not have been, involved in a game of relativism. the Japanese ATTACKED the US, not the other way around. Regards, Michael C. Moynihan
