RAF Heavy Bomber Stations fell into two distinct types:-
1. The 'Expansion Period' type, built in the mid-late 30s, on an opulent design with substantial three-story barrack blocks fed by underground steam piped heating. Interestingly, the Officers' Mess building is equipped with false chimneys, as you see if you look at a photo of one; the chimneys often exit the roof directly over a large window!
Examples : Lindholme, Swinderby, Bramcote, Scampton, Manby
2. The wartime 'ecomomy' type. These had dispersed sites for accommodation, usually consisting of the ubiquitous Nissen huts on a concrete base, with brick end walls. These huts were notorious for their dampness, and for the trouble neede to keep the pot belly stove fed with coal or firewood. They were otherwise unheated, but did have electric light.
Examples : Elsham Wolds, Kirmington, Ludford Magna
I have 100s of photos of these.
