PBS, or one of the cable channels devoted to history, about a year ago, ran a documentary called 'Whispers in the Sky.' It discussed allied aircrew, especially bomber crew, putting down in neutral countries, deciding that to be interned was better than being interred. I recall that in the final analysis, they came to the conclusion that most, but certainly not all, of such incidents were by aircraft in certifiable distress.

A goodly portion of the program centered on the British policy of stamping records with the Lack of Moral Fiber epithet. The conclusion was that it was needlessly cruel, and lacking in any reasonable purpose, but just used to humiliate a lot of decent people who had legitimately reached the end of their rope.
