The Germans needed an accurate weather report without breaking the radio silence of the u-boats. The spot was chosen because it seemed like a place less likely to be discovered. You can find much more information about these stations here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weather_Station_Kurt

There is an extra reason not discussed before, but there was a long standing intention to bomb New York either by bomber aircraft, or by a winged V-2 rocket called the A9/A10 Amerika Rakete. This was intended to be piloted to it's target since automated systems were not sophisticated enough.

There was an intention to locate automatic transponders along the route of the missile's flight in Greenland and Labrador.

Furthermore in September 1944, Hitler ordered that the ultra long range Me-264 be prepared for a mission to bomb New York and there were other indications in a decree known as FHQU 219/44 dated 30 Sept 1944 directing urgency in preparation of an atomic weapon.

These weather stations had secondary significance for a proposed New York raid

...again the A-bomb around. Well, already answered that part in the "did hitler survive the war" thread so won't repeat my points here.

As for the Me264 flight, that would've been curious to see. I mean, by the date you give (30 september'44), there was no Me264 at all. Only one prototype out three prototypes started had been built. The two latter had been destroyed by air raids before completion, and the V1 (the only flying one) was also so badly damaged in an air raid in July that no efforts were ever tried to bring it to fliable status again.

It would've been also a nice turn of circunstances of Hitler's opinions (hardly surprising seen his historial, but still), because by mid-1943 he had told Messerchmitt he'd back the Me264 for naval operations only. And some days before the date you give (in september the 23th) Dönitz himself convinced Hitler to drop the whole project down, and so was teletyped to Messerschmitt offices. Something confirmed later in October with the directive to concentrate german aircraft production into fighters and jets only.

so I wonder, how could hitler order the Me264 to be "prepared for a mission to bomb new york" in september 30th, when there were no fliable Me264s at all? (the V1, the only one which had been completed was seriously damaged in an air raid months before, as stated before, and there was no repair work done on it at all by September). How could hitler order such a thing, when he had stated that he wanted the plane only for maritime duties, and then that the plane was to be dropped alltogether only 7 days before?.

All that before fixing on the main problem of the whole theory: the Me264 was a PROTOTYPE that was labelled as "unsuitable for operational deployment" by the german Trial Establishment Headquarters, in June'44. The plane, when loaded with war equipment, was simply too heavy to take off due to heavy wingloads and very low powerloads.

So we have a plane that has no numbers at all (none could fly in September 1944), that had been labelled as "unsuitable for operational deployement" by the German testing authorities, that had initally been backed for maritime operations only (not carpet bombing) and had been cancelled by Hitler himself in the 23th of September. Then suddenly 7 days later, that same model ,of which only one example got ever to fly (before being grounded forever), was ordered to do some kind of bombing over new york by the same man who had cancelled it in the first place?.

As I said...it would've been a curious thing had it ever happened. Problem is, it never did happen. And had it happened it would've never been to conduct an atomic bombing. Such things aren't impossible with an atomic bomb at hand and germans never got one, nor ever got near the point of getting one.

As for the A9 and A10 projects, they were never near completion. In fact they even failed to get anywhere past the "idea" stage. Not even in the prototipe stage; the most they were was but some sketches on a paper.
And given the reported "accuracy" (or lack thereof) of the V-2 launchs over London (many missed the biggest urban target in the world at the time, by a wide margin, in launch trips of less than 400 miles of distance), one would have to wonder the "accuracy" of an hypotetical german ICBM in 1945. Had it ever had the chance to exist, that, again, it didn't. Yeah, I know about the "guidance systems" the germans intended to use in the rocket. Problem is, the germans never were capable to radio-guide their A-4s up to London or Antwerpen. They had to resort to inertial-only guidance because radio guidance related problems proved unsourmontable. So, if they failed to provide a valid radio guidance for an "easy" target as London, how come they'd have "solved" the whole matter by a radio transmitter in a Weather station?.

Laughable ,to say the least.

Finally: the last nail on the A-9/10 theory coffin. Those rockets were never more than sketches on a piece of paper because by 1943 (and after the British bombing of the Peenemunde research center) all the investigation and testing got centered around the A-4/V-2 which got full priority and complete allocation of the available research resources. The A-9/A-10 combo investigation (which, for starters, never was too serious) was cancelled and completely abandoned then and no more work was done on the weapon.

Kiwiguy, on a personal note, seriously, and respectfully, you should really re-check the fiability of the sources you're using.
