During late 1943 Germany and Italy were sending submarines to Penang (Malaya) laden with high value cargoes to break the naval blockades between Europe and Japan.
Last to reach Japanese controlled Djakarta on 12 December 1944, the U-219 had a cargo of broken down components for twelve V-2 rockets which it shared with U-195.
The Japanese shipped Rubber and Tungsten back to Germany. Germany shipped Uranium oxide, mercury and optical goods, plus a variety of weapons, aircraft engines and blueprints for Japan to use.
One U-boat U-862 patrolled around Australia and New Zealand in 1945. The wreck of her sister, U-196 is said to be in the surfline of a beach in northwest New Zealand
