By September 1940 several German batteries had been established on the French coast facing Dover. They were:
Siegfried battery of 4x38cm (14.9'

guns south of Gris-Nez Friederich-August battery of 3x30.5cm (12'

guns north of Boulogne Grosser Kurfurst battery of 4x28cm guns (11'

guns at Gris-Nez Prinz Heinrich battery of 2x28cm guns (11'

near Calais M1, M2, M3 & M4 batteries between Calais and Gris Nez with 14 17cm guns (6.7'

.
There were also no less than 42 heavy and medium field artillery batteries (7 captured from the French Army) covering the Straits, although unable to reach the English shore.
The targets of the heavy guns were mainly Dover itself and its port and defences.
