My father picked up a bayonet for a couple dollars at a garage sale.

On the base of the blade are the words: WAFFENFABRIK NEUHAUSEN

On the reverse side is a serial number (469021).

Can anyone provide information on what the inscription refers to, ie a translation of the wording as well as approximately when the bayonet was manufactured, what type of rifle it likely worked with, etc.

Any info would be appreciated.

After World War I, the German military and industry adopted a series of codes to represent manufacturer names. More information on these codes can vbe found at: http://www.radix.net/~bbrown/codes_full.html

It was a standard practice to stamp most parts of a rifle with at least the last 2 or 3 digits of the serial number (The U.S. didn't do this). That is probably the serial number of the rifle for which that bayonet was issued.

'Waffenfabrik' means 'Weapons Manufacturer' and 'Neuhausen' could be the name of a town, or the owner (I think it means 'New Houses'

Ordnance/Manufacturing/Inspection codes were adopted in 1933, so your bayonet is at least that old. I ran through the ordnance lists and this manufacture was not listed

In German, Waffenfabrik means Weapons Factory, Neuhausen is probably the name of the town or city where the factory was located.

NEUHAUSEN is definitely the name of the location of the manufacturer. A = part of Munich is called 'NEUHAUSEN', but I haven=B4t heard of a weapons = manufacturer there so far. Peter Richter from Munich, Bavaria
