It is nothing new that the military analysts can make or break public support in times of war. Most people sit at home and feed of the reports and analysis of these very respectful people. We thinks they understand much more than we do on issues of war, strategies, combat, anti-terrorism etc. If they say the army is not prepared for something we listen, if they say a certain policy makes sense we listen, actually most of us know very little about the issues they discuss with a confident tone in their voice so we tend to believe them. The discussion on the New York Times that I read later on the Irish Trojan in Tennessee that these military analysis are far less objective than we tend think comes as no surprise. I’ve seen it happen in other countries where the support of the media was easily summoned by an appeal to their self importance. Don’t we all want to feel as if we are highly trusted and respected by the government and have the privilege to share the thought process with the leaders of our country. Sure they were flattered away, sure the Bush administration has done everything it could possibly do to influence public opinion and sure we are all a little suckers but remember that everyone is a sucker on occasion and the less we are in love with our self image the less we are susceptible for deceit.
