I was recently browsing in B & N, and found a picture in a book of a german soldier shoot a mosin nagant sniper rifle. The book said that the german soldiers liked the mn sniper rifles.

I know that the russians start with a large advantage in the number of trained snipers equiped with scoped rifles.

Anyone care to explain if this was a case of the germans making do with what they found or was the mn that much better.

Are there any great advantages/differences for sniping between the mauser and the nagant?

The Germans never had enough equipment of any kind and you would be absolutely astonished at the number of enemy weapons adopted by them and given official type numbers, from the Czech ZB26 machinegun to the Norwegian Krag-Jorgensen rifle.

The Moisen-Nagant had one major disadvantage as a sniper rifle. Because of its high mounted scope (required to clear the bolt for opening) and the shape of its stock, it was hard for the shooter to establish a consistant 'spot weld' of cheek-to-stock contact. This meant that it was harder to re-establish a good sight picture after each shot. The Rusians also used two different telescope sights and the earlier one required a shooter with perfect vision to use. Otherwise, the MN is longer overall (better range) but the Mausers were more concealable. The Finns also used captured Moisen-Nagants as sniper rifles and the rifle survived in this role in the Eastern Bloc long after WW II.
