listen, chaps, I was there. as a kid, I watched all of the WWI movies available. there were many good ones. but I think, from reading this board, that you're mostly a younger group out there ... so I'll limit my notes here to movies made after 1942.

the most authentic war movie, besides being good drama, The Big Red One.

very good: The Battle for San Pietro.

Hell is for Heroes? No No No. that sort of ego-manic one-man-army behavior not real nor tolerated. phoney baloney.

almost unknown: Attack! ... a highly stylised little war play by Robert Altman. see it if you can; authentic flavour.

not exactly a war movie, but ... I enjoyed The Sand Pebbles, very much.

definitely a must-see: Paths of Glory.

this list is no more complete than any other, nor is it intended to be so. just a few thoughts.

the thing to remember is that movies are not war and not neccessarily history, either. movies are forever entertainment

don't take them too serious..

That was excellent. But, I think it was a documentary.
